Sigma Phi Epsilon Hall of Fame member Jackie Don Wheeler would have been proud after this year’s 6th Annual 2017 Texas Beta “Balanced Man Scholarship Luncheon”.   Close to 80 people were in attendance at this scholarship event at the recently updated University of North Texas Union Building.

Twenty freshmen were chosen as finalists for the academic scholarship and they got to listen to UNT Athletic Director Wren Baker speak about the positive change on campus and the vision for UNT athletics.

Some of those in the crowd were newly elected district governor Glen Ezell, distinguished alumni Jay Lombardo, distinguished alumni Duffy Oyster, alumni Wade Willis, alumni Bryan Marsh, alumni Joe Busick, alumni Chris Alexander, alumni Bill Popek, alumni Luis Sanchez, and  David Leersen.

2017 Michael Moon Scholarship Recognizing Diligence/Andres Moreno and Mason AlexanderFreshman Andres Johnny Moreno took home the first award of the afternoon, that award being the Michael Moon Academic Scholarship honoring diligence. The active award went to Mason Alexander who is a member of the National Honor Society.

2017 Michael Eller Academic Scholarship Recognizing Brotherly Love/Christian Sanchez and Jacob Escobar with Alumni Bill Popek and Alumni Luis SanchezChristian Sanchez was your second freshman award winner at this event. Sanchez’s grades in high school and athletic ability secured the Michael Eller Academic Scholarship honoring brotherly love. The active award went to Jacob Escobar who earned 3.2 GPA the previous school year.

Martino Academic Scholarship Recognizing Virtue / Jayden Balfour and Hector Alvarez with Alumni John KolinofskyThe Frank Martino academic awards recognizing virtue awards on this day would be handed to freshman Jayden Aubrey Balfour. Balfour spent his days at Pine Tree High School in Longview as a member of student council, the National Honor Society, and as a soccer player. This year’s active award winner went to Hector Alvarez who ended up with a 3.8 GPA for the previous year. This intelligent junior is majoring in finance and marketing.

2017 Jack D. Wheeler Academic Scholarship Recognizing Brotherly Love / Angel Escobedo and Ryan McConnell with Alumni Duffy OysterAngel Escobedo out of Euless Trinity was awarded the Jack D. Wheeler Academic Scholarship Award on this day. Wheeler’s leadership during the 60s, 70s, and 80s at North Texas State and for the local Denton chapter and Sigma Phi Epsilon national headquarters was one of a kind. The active award went to Ryan McConnell who also has supreme fund-raising abilities much like brother Wheeler.
