2012 “BALANCED MAN” Scholarship Recipients

This year’s First Annual 2012 Balanced Man Scholarship Luncheon exceeded expectations of the Texas Beta Alumni Volunteer Corporation. Close to 100 people attended this scholarship luncheon at the new UNT College of Business Building on August 26th, 2012. Administrators, faculty, incoming freshmen, alumni, and active Sig Eps were on hand to see over $3,000 dollars in scholarship money donated to UNT students for academic achievement. Dean of Business Finley Graves was the keynote speaker at this special event. All scholarship winners are listed below.

Michael D. Eller Academic “LEADERSHIP” Awards

The Michael D. Eller Academic Leadership Award for “incoming freshman” went to Robert Hansen who excelled in high school with a 3.6 GPA. Hansen was involved with the National Honors Society. The scholar-athlete ran track and cross country during his high school years, being appointed captain of his district champion cross country team. Hansen will focus on finance while attending the University of North Texas.

The “Active ScholarshipAward” was handed to SigEp senior brother Jeff McKee. Mckee has been involved with Texas Beta at UNT for just over four years, accomplishing “back to back” 4.0 GPAs in the last academic year. His focus at Texas Beta has been with philanthropies, recruitment and housing. He personifies many of the traits of Mike Eller; the most notable traits are just being a natural at making people laugh and being able to bring people together. McKee will graduate this year with an Engineering degree.

Frank N. Martino Academic Scholarship Recognizing “VIRTUE”

The J. Frank Martino Academic Scholarship was awarded to incoming freshman Austin Hartey. This National Honor Society member excelled in and out of the classroom starring on his high school baseball team. The volunteer at Southwest Community Center had a GPA of 3.7 at his Austin high school and plans to major in finance while at the University of North Texas.

Thomas H. Craft Academic Scholarships Recognizing “DILIGENCE”

The “incoming freshman award” went to Kenneth Grunden who had a 3.5 GPA in high school. Grunden was not only team captain of his football and baseball teams, but he also earned All-State honors in both sports as well his senior year. On top of being an athlete and scholar, Grunden was a participant in the Civil Air Patrol for one year and has a pending contract with Army ROTC and Ranger Challenge. Grunden will be studying business management while at UNT.

The “active award” for the Thomas H. Craft Academic Scholarship Recognizing Diligence was awarded to SigEp brother Cory Sockwell. Sockwell’s diligence has been seen at both UNT, Texas Beta and in the Middle East. Sockwell scored a GPA of 3.5 in the spring of 2012 after spending a significant amount of time in Afghanistan and Iraq the last two years as an exemplary member of the United States Marine Corps.

Jack Wheeler Academic Scholarship Recognizing “BROTHERLY LOVE”

Brother Jason Inderlied was named this year’s Jack Wheeler “Brotherly Love” Academic Scholarship winner. Inderlied has been active with SigEp for 2 ½ years at Texas Beta. The Justin, TX native is highly intelligent and definitely possesses the financial skill set to be very successful upon graduation from UNT. Inderlied is an accounting major and acts as the V.P. of Finance with Sigma Phi Epsilon. SigEp President Bruce Davis says, “he’s the finance guru of Texas Beta, making responsible decisions around a budget come very easy to him and we are very grateful to have him in this position.” The comptroller has also acted as chaplain within the executive branch at Texas Beta. The junior scored a 3.5 GPA last spring and holds a cumulative average of 3.2.
